Dampak Media Sosial Terhadap Pola Interaksi Sosial Mahasiswa Universitas Negeri Medan

This study examines the impact of social media on the social interaction patterns of students at Universitas Negeri Medan using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with students from various faculties. The findings indicate that social media has significantly shifted communication patterns from face-to-face interaction to digital communication, with students spending an average of 6–7 hours per day online. While social media expands social networks and improves coordination efficiency, it also tends to reduce the depth of interpersonal relationships and may lead to emotional isolation among students. Furthermore, although social media facilitates collective mobilization in various social activities, participation is often symbolic rather than based on genuine involvement. In the context of citizenship, these changes highlight the importance of maintaining a balance between digital engagement and direct interaction. Strengthening digital literacy is essential to ensure responsible and productive use of social media in shaping positive student character, enhancing social awareness, and fostering more meaningful interpersonal relationships in academic and social life.
