This study examines communication patterns between mothers and daughters and between mothers and sons within family relationships in North Kembangan, West Jakarta. Family communication serves as the primary foundation for children's emotional development, interpersonal relationships, and gender identity. However, communication practices are often influenced by gender-based social expectations that shape differences in parental treatment toward daughters and sons. This study aims to describe these communication patterns and identify characteristics of effective family communication. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with mothers, daughters, and sons and analyzed using data condensation, coding, categorization, thematic analysis, and visualization with NVivo software. The findings indicate that communication between mothers and children is strongly influenced by gender construction. Mothers generally perceive their relationships with all children as equally close, whereas children's experiences reveal differences in openness, emotional security, and fairness. Daughters more frequently experience communication emphasizing domestic responsibilities, obedience, restrictions, and unequal treatment, while sons receive greater autonomy but stronger expectations regarding independence, discipline, and leadership. Effective communication is characterized by empathy, openness, equality, emotional support, constructive dialogue, and collaborative conflict management. The study concludes that dialogic and reflective communication based on gender equity contributes to healthier family relationships and supports children's psychological well-being. These findings provide practical implications for parents in developing more equitable communication practices within families.
