Abstract

To produce quality products, one way is to carry out the machining process well. Factors that influence surface roughness in the turning process are the treatment of the chisel blade, depth of cut, cutting speed, feed motion, machine vibration during cutting. This research was carried out to determine the surface roughness value using the BOHLER brand HSS Mo RAPID EXTRA 1200 chisel type on the SC 1045 steel test material. This test was carried out 5 times in each test using different cutting speeds (Vc), while the feed motion and the cutting depth is the same. To obtain surface roughness results, measurements were carried out using the Surface Test-402 measuring instrument. In 1 test, 3 measurements were carried out on different sides. The lowest surface roughness value was at cutting speed (Vc)= 45 m/min with Ra= 4.5µm with cutting time (tc)= 3.38 minutes. And the highest roughness was at cutting speed (Vc)= 235 m/min with Ra= 7.6 µm with cutting time (tc)= 1.05 minutes.
